As other types of mills, rod mill is used to grind material into fine powder, but differ from ball mill, it employs long steel rods instead of balls as the grinding medium.

The distinctive feature of a rod mill is that the length of the cylindrical shell is between 1.5 to 2.5 times its diameter. This ratio is important as the rods which are only a few cm. shorter than the shell length, must be prevented from turning or bending or they can become wedged across the diameter of the cylinder leading to a "rod tangle". The ratio cannot be so large that the rods deform and break. Since rods longer than about 6 m bend, this establishes the maximum length limitation of a rod mill.
